Simple Text File Productivity System

Here's a straightforward, text file-based system to help you stay organized.

Consistency is key. Stick with this system, and you'll find yourself more productive.

The Setup

You'll need just three .txt files:

  1. master.txt
  2. today.txt
  3. quick_tasks.txt

The System

1. master.txt

This is your central task repository. Divide it into four sections:

WORK
- Task 1
- Task 2

PERSONAL
- Task 1
- Task 2

HOME
- Task 1
- Task 2

FAMILY
- Task 1
- Task 2

2. today.txt

This is your daily focus file. Create it each morning.

3. quick_tasks.txt

For small tasks that take 2-5 minutes.

Daily Routine

  1. Morning:

    • Open master.txt
    • Choose 3 important tasks
    • Copy them to a new today.txt
  2. Throughout the day:

    • Focus on today.txt tasks
    • Check quick_tasks.txt during short breaks
  3. End of day:

    • Review today.txt
    • Move unfinished tasks back to master.txt
    • Delete today.txt

Time Blocking

  • Mornings: Focused work (when kids are at school)
  • Afternoons/evenings: Mix of work and personal tasks

Weekly Maintenance

Spend 15 minutes updating master.txt and quick_tasks.txt

Why This Works

  • Simplicity: Just text files, no fancy apps
  • Focus: Daily priorities are clear
  • Flexibility: Easy to modify for your needs
  • Persistence: Master list keeps track of all tasks
