Cursor IDE Problems Mount With Each Update

Cursor IDE has always had a few quirks. Most developers were fine with that, since it brought awesome AI features to coding that made up for the occasional glitches. But with the recent 0.45.x and 0.46.x versions, things are getting worse instead of better. Instead of fixing the issues we've been dealing with, Cursor seems more interested in cramming in fancy new agent features while the basics fall apart.

Performance Degradation

The occasional lag was tolerable before, but since version 0.45.9, it's gotten really bad. Users on the official Cursor forums are reporting the app freezing up constantly, with some saying it's "almost impossible to use at times." Simple stuff like switching tabs or opening files now takes forever. Users mention it "freezes even when I'm not using Composer — for example, when switching tabs or opening files." Both Mac and Windows users are struggling, with some Windows users even experiencing system crashes after updates. Many devs say they have to restart Cursor multiple times per day just to keep working.

Context Window Limitations

The AI context system in Cursor has always been a bit finicky, but we found ways to work with it. Now, though, recent updates have made things worse. Users say the "longer context" setting doesn't do anything anymore. No matter what settings you use, Cursor only sends "a few hundred lines" of code to the AI. Even when you manually tag files for the AI to use, "even @ing the documents directly doesn't send the whole thing." These context problems got noticeably worse after the 0.45.4 update. In version 0.46, the AI is reportedly "losing context immediately" during conversations, making it way less helpful.

Update Issues

Instead of fixing what's broken, recent updates keep adding more stuff that doesn't work right. Version 0.45.9 messed with local file structures and got directory paths wrong. The auto-updater is particularly annoying, installing updates even when users click 'no' or just want to see what's in the changelog.

Version 0.46 shows how Cursor is now obsessed with agent-based development, adding changes to the Agent and Multi-step Planning (MCP) systems that users say are totally unstable. They're clearly focusing on shiny new features instead of making the core product reliable. They've released patches (0.45.10, 0.45.11) to try fixing things, but users report mixed results, with some seeing new problems after installing the "fixes." Lots of users are now downgrading to older versions just to get work done.

Community Response

The community is pretty fed up at this point. Long-time users who used to recommend Cursor and put up with its occasional weirdness are now seriously frustrated. Forum threads are full of people calling version 0.46 "broken" or "the worst update in history" with detailed explanations of how it's messing up their workflow. Users are also calling out the poor communication from the dev team, who aren't giving clear timelines on when these problems will be fixed. Paying customers are especially annoyed, with one saying "I paid money for this, only to be met with constant frustration."
