Adapt Your Coding Style to LLMs or Get Left Behind

There seems to be a stark divide in the developer community regarding the effectiveness of LLMs for coding. Some are disappointed, others quietly reap the benefits of these powerful tools.

I encourage everyone to approach these tools with an open mind and a willingness to experiment. My current go-to tools, Claude Opus 3 and GPT-4o, have significantly boosted my productivity.

Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of LLMs

To maximize the potential of LLMs in your coding workflow, you must grasp their strengths and limitations. LLMs are trained on vast amounts of data and code from across the web, including GitHub and Stack Overflow. They excel when working with well-established stacks that have a strong community presence. For instance, PHP/Laravel and LLMs are a powerful combination, while more niche or cutting-edge frameworks and languages may yield less impressive results.

LLMs thrive when you adhere to common programming styles and best practices. If your codebase is well-structured and follows conventions, LLMs can generate more relevant and seamless code snippets.

Adapting Your Coding Style for Optimal LLM Integration

To truly leverage the power of LLMs, you must fine-tune (!) your coding style to align with what the LLM expects (like, how everyone else on the web does it, a. k. a. best practices). This doesn't mean sacrificing your personal preferences entirely, but rather structuring your code in a way that promotes LLM understanding. Consider these points:

  1. Use the framework and language as intended, adhering to their recommended patterns and conventions.
  2. Maintain a clean, well-organized structure and architecture that prioritizes readability and maintainability.
  3. Embrace object-oriented programming (OOP) principles, crafting well-defined classes with methods that serve a clear purpose.
  4. Avoid massive, monolithic functions or classes. Instead, break them down into smaller, focused components.

By adopting these practices, you'll elevate the quality of your code and enable LLMs to provide more precise and efficient code suggestions.

Mastering Communication with LLMs

Providing clear and specific instructions is the number one priority when collaborating with LLMs. While LLMs can process vast amounts of input data, their output is typically limited to a few thousand tokens. Be crystal clear about what you want the LLM to generate, whether it's a complete class or specific methods that need modification.

In my interactions with LLMs, I often provide ample context by copying and pasting relevant files into the input. LLMs can handle this effortlessly, but it's essential to articulate your expectations for the output, including the desired structure and scope.

Rather than relying on a lengthy back-and-forth process with the LLM, focus on refining your input and ensuring your codebase adheres to best practices. By providing unambiguous prompts and maintaining a clean, standardized codebase, you can significantly improve the accuracy and relevance of the generated code snippets.

Leveraging LLMs for Architecture and High-Level Design

The effectiveness of LLMs in outlining application architecture or bringing abstract ideas to life is limited. Asking an LLM to create a high-level design or structure for your app from scratch often yields unsatisfactory results.

But they are still not entirely useless for these tasks. Again, key is to provide the LLM with clear, concrete instructions and a well-defined context. Instead of relying on the LLM to generate the architecture from a vague idea, consider presenting it with the options you've already thought through, along with your unstructured notes or ideas. Ask the LLM to evaluate these options, suggest which one it recommends, and provide a rationale for its choice.

By framing the task as a selection and evaluation problem rather than an open-ended design challenge, you can still leverage the LLM's capabilities to assist in high-level decision-making.
